New £6,000 funding available for research in primary dental care

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and the British Society for General Dental Surgery (BSGDS) are inviting applications for the 2010 BSGDS Scholarship Award for research in primary dental care.

Established by the BSGDS in 1993, the scholarship supports a single research project in primary dental care and is awarded every two years. The successful recipient of the 2010 scholarship will receive up to £6,000 to fund their project.

Applications are invited from general dental practitioners with at least four years' experience in a primary care setting, and should be submitted by completing the FGDP(UK)/BSGDS protocol submission form. The closing date for applications is 11 June 2010, and the winning protocol will be selected by a panel of members from the FGDP(UK) Board and BSGDS Executive Committee.

Last year's award was shared between two research projects: 'Cue utilisation in the referral of suspicious oral soft tissue lesions from primary dental care' and 'Insights into management of chronic oro-facial pain in dentistry – a national questionnaire survey'. Reports of these projects will appear shortly in the journal Primary Dental Care.

The FGDP(UK) supports the BSGDS in the award of this scholarship as part of its initiatives to promote research in primary dental care.

To help address the problem of a lack of research skills among primary care workers, the Faculty has produced a series of research leaflets, held workshops and training days, and developed a network of divisional research facilitators.

It has also appointed two national research facilitators and defined a framework of competencies for research in primary dental care. A protocol submission form for applicants, as well as guidelines for completing the form, can be found at http://www.fgdp.org.uk/research/financial_html, or can be requested by contacting Amrita Narain on 020 7869 6750 or anarain@rcseng.ac.uk.

The FGDP(UK) is the academic home for general dental practitioners and dental care professionals in the UK and is based at The Royal College of Surgeons of England.
