Preventing Tooth Decay for a Healthy Smile. What you should know and what you can do.
What is tartar? Tartar, sometimes called calculus, is dental plaque which has hardened on the surface of the teeth and gums. Tartar gives plaque more surface area on which to grow and a much stickier surface to stick to, leading to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Tartar can also form at and underneath the gum line and can irritate gum tissues.
Plaque is a sticky, colourless film of bacteria which constantly forms on teeth. It is a major cause of gum disease and tooth decay and can harden into tartar if not removed daily.
Cavities or dental caries, are other names for tooth decay. Tooth decay can be influenced by our lifestyle, what we eat, how well we take care of our teeth and the amount of fluoride in our water.
