What is the shelf life of Colgate Gel Kam?

Three years

What is the difference between Colgate Gel-Kam and Colgate Duraphat 2800?

The main differences are the mode of action and fluoride levels. Gel Kam adheres to the teeth to form a stannous fluorophosphates layer which is rich in fluoride, inhibiting cariogenic bacteria. It is to be used following the last tooth brushing at night, when teeth are more at risk of caries. Duraphat 2800 toothpaste replaces a regular toothpaste, delivering a higher level of fluoride.

In addition Colgate Gel Kam can be used from age 3 years and over, whereas Duraphat 2800 toothpaste can be used by children 10 years and over.

Is Colgate Gel-Kam available on prescription?

No. Colgate Gel-Kam is not listed on the BNF. It is available over the counter in pharmacies.

Why do my patients still need to brush their teeth with regular fluoride toothpaste?

Gel Kam is to be used only once a day, so patients should use their regular toothpaste at other times of the day.

How do my patients use Colgate Gel Kam?

The dosage for children, adults and the elderly is the same. Patients are to apply Colgate Gel Kam to a clean toothbrush, as they would toothpaste, once a day at bedtime or as part of the last regular tooth brushing regime before retiring to bed. Colgate Gel-Kam is to be brushed onto all tooth surfaces, and then swished around for 1 minute - in a similar manner to using a rinse - pushing the gel between the teeth with the tongue and cheek muscles. The excess should then be spat out, patients should not swallow or rinse.

How does Colgate Gel-Kam work?

Colgate Gel Kam contains SnF2 which forms stannous fluorophosphates which provide a long lasting fluoride coating which reduces enamel and dentine solubility.

What sort of patient is Colgate Gel Kam suitable for?

Colgate Gel Kam is recommended for adults and children over 3 years old.

Is Colgate Gel-Kam clinically proven?

Gel-Kam is clinically proven as an aid to prevent caries1,2.
It is also clinically proven to reduce cariogenic bacteria3.

What is the therapeutic indication of Colgate Gel Kam?

Gel Kam is indicated for the treatment and prevention of dental caries and decalcification of the teeth. Colgate Gel-Kam will prevent caries, decalcification and demineralisation of the teeth when used on a daily basis. Colgate Gel Kam will also treat and arrest active surface caries in enamel and dentin, preventing further carious breakdown of the dentition.
